The 4 Day Amazon Tour takes visitors on a whirlwind tour of one of the world's most vibrant and diverse ecosystems. The trip begins with a leisurely hike to the riverside to find caimans in the reeds. Marvel at the astonishing variety of birds that the Amazon River Basin supports. No place in the world boasts more exotic bird species per square mile, and on this tour visitors get a chance to see them all. After a canoe trip through the Oxbow Lake and a tour of a Brazil nut plantation, the tour group will head out in search of the Amazon's most reclusive mammals on a close-formation night hike. Though the trip is short, there's enough excitement to fill a photo album and memories that will linger for a lifetime.

ITINERARY

DAY 1
Arrive Cusco - Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata River

Arrive Cusco with a transfer to our Puerto Maldonado Headquarters; here you will be asked to pack only the necessary gear for the next few days, the rest can be held securely at our Headquarters. We will then drive roughly 12.5 miles to the Tambopata River Port and enter the Native Community of Infierno. From here we will take a boat to Refugio Amazonas; this 2.5 hour boat ride will take us past the Community of Infierno and the Tambopata National Reserve´s checkpoint and into the buffer zone of this 1.3 million hectare conservation unit. Upon arriving the Refugio Amazonas, the lodge manager will welcome and brief you with important navigation and security tips. After dinner we will venture out to the river's edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the gleaming red reflections from caiman eyes. We will spend the night at the Refugio Amazonas. (Lunch & Dinner)

DAY 2
Oxbow Lake – Canopy – Farm Visit

Today we will paddle around the Oxbow Lake on a canoe or a catamaran, looking for wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman and horned screamers, and hopefully an otter. Overhead sightings of macaws and other birdlife. A thirty minute walk from Refugio Amazonas leads to an 82 foot scaffolding canopy tower, the views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws and raptors are likely. After lunch we will visit a farm for an Ethnobotanical tour. Here we will find a variety of plants and trees used by the locals for a variety of purposes. After dinner, nightly lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas here they discuss conservation threats, opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve. We will spend the night at the Refugio Amazonas. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 3
Parrot Clay Lick – Brazil Nut Trail

After breakfast we will take a boat ride and 1 hour hike to a clay lick. Here will see parrots and parakeets, Dusky headed and Cobalt winged Parakeet, Mealy, Yellow-crowned Amazons, Blue-headed Pionus and severe macaw and Orange-cheeled (Barraband`s) Parrot. We will enjoy lunch then embark on a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades, where the precarious remains of a camp used two months out of the year by Brazil Nut gatherers can still be experienced. We will be demonstrating the whole process of the rain forest's only sustainably harvested product from collection, transportation to drying. On to the mammal clay lick, which is about twenty minutes walking distance from Refugio Amazonas, is a peccary clay lick. These wild rain forest pigs show up in herds of five to twenty to eat clay during the late morning. Chances of spotting them are around 15% but well worth the short hike. Other wildlife also visit the clay including deer, guan and parakeets. After dinner, we will enjoy a night hike, when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. We will spend the night at the Refugio Amazonas. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAY 4
Depart
After breakfast you are transferred to Cusco Airport for departures. (Breakfast)
